A galley kitchen can be a challenge to remodel, especially when it includes an outside corner that limits traditional layouts. Our latest project presented exactly this kind of puzzle. The existing kitchen was cramped, with the refrigerator placed in a way that blocked the main walkway and broke up counter space. We knew that to create a more functional and open kitchen, we had to rethink the layout carefully.

This post shares the before pictures and explains the creative decisions we are exploring to improve flow and usability. This glimpse into the planning phase shows how thoughtful design can transform even the trickiest spaces.

Challenges of the Original Kitchen Layout

The kitchen was a classic galley style but complicated by an outside corner. This corner created an awkward turn that limited how cabinets and appliances could be arranged. The refrigerator was positioned near the entrance, which narrowed the main walkway and made the space feel cramped. The pantry was tucked away but not in a convenient spot, making storage less accessible. After several extended conversations, we were hearing that cramped cooking space and unusable counterspace were the big improvement points.

These issues led to:

  • A congested walkway that made moving through the kitchen difficult

  • Interrupted counter space, reducing the area available for food prep

  • Inefficient use of the corner space, which often goes wasted in galley kitchens

Our goal was to open up the kitchen, improve storage, and create a long stretch of uninterrupted counter space for easier cooking and entertaining.

Creative Layout Solutions

To tackle the outside corner and improve flow, we decided to move the refrigerator to the opposite end of the kitchen. This simple change opened up the main walkway, making the kitchen feel larger and less crowded. With the refrigerator relocated, we gained the ability to extend the countertop along the longer entrance of the kitchen without breaks.

Next, we moved the pantry to the end of the outside corner. This spot is often tricky to use, but by placing the pantry here, we made the most of it and created a convenient storage area that is easy to access. This will be a wonderful place for snacks/coffee to be stored so grandchildren can access the space without interrupting the flow of the chef.

Additionally, the trash can was blocking the pantry door. In the design process, we implemented a pull-out waste bin cabinet that fits perfectly within the space.

These changes resulted in:

  • A clear, wide walkway that improves movement through the kitchen

  • A long, continuous counter space ideal for meal prep and small appliances

  • A well-positioned pantry that maximizes the outside corner space and storage capacity

  • Full access to the trash without interrupting the opening of any cabinets.

Benefits of the New Design

This new layout offers several practical advantages:

  • Improved workflow: With the refrigerator at one end and the pantry in the corner, the kitchen forms a natural work triangle that reduces unnecessary steps.

  • More counter space: The uninterrupted countertop allows for multiple cooking tasks at once and provides room for guests to gather.

  • Better storage: The pantry’s new location makes it easier to organize food and kitchen supplies, keeping the space tidy.

  • Enhanced openness: Removing the refrigerator from the entrance widens the main walkway, making the kitchen feel more inviting.

This design also anticipates the needs of a busy household, where multiple people may be cooking or moving through the kitchen at the same time.

Finishing Touches

Beyond the major layout changes, this kitchen is also getting a full aesthetic and functional makeover. One of the most exciting upgrades is the new custom wood range hood, which will replace the old recirculating microwave vent. Not only will this finally provide proper ventilation for the cooking area, but it also adds a beautiful architectural focal point to the room — truly a two‑birds‑one‑stone improvement that blends performance with craftsmanship.

We’re also incorporating a built‑in cabinet waste bin, a small but meaningful upgrade that keeps the kitchen tidy and frees up valuable floor space. Thoughtful storage like this makes everyday tasks smoother and keeps the counters clear, exactly what this remodel is aiming for.

To refresh the overall look, the entire space will be painted, the wallpaper removed, and all window and door trim repaired and updated. These finishing details will brighten the room and give it a clean, cohesive feel that matches the new layout.

Lighting plays a huge role in how a kitchen functions and feels, so we’re layering in all three levels of illumination:

  • Under‑cabinet lighting for task work

  • Toe‑kick lighting for subtle nighttime visibility and ambiance

  • Sconces framing the window to add warmth and architectural interest

This layered approach ensures the kitchen is both practical and inviting, morning to night.

With these enhancements, the remodel goes far beyond solving layout Challenges it becomes a complete transformation. The result will be a kitchen that feels intentional and custom for years to come. Family dinners en route!

What’s Next for the Remodel

We are excited to begin the transformation and bring this plan to life. The next steps include:

  • Removing the existing refrigerator and pantry units

  • Moving applicable outlets and plumbing fixtures

  • Fixing that old Genair for proper ventilation on our new range hood

  • Installing new cabinetry

  • New countertops

  • Updating lighting and finishes to complement the new layout

The goal is to create a kitchen that is not only functional but also welcoming and stylish, perfectly suited to the home’s character and the client’s lifestyle.

This project shows how thoughtful changes in layout can solve common galley kitchen problems. By moving key appliances and rethinking storage, we are turning a cramped space into a bright, efficient kitchen that will serve the family well for years to come.

If you have a kitchen with awkward corners or limited space, consider how small shifts in appliance placement and storage can open up your space. Sometimes, the best solution is to look at the kitchen from a new angle and rethink how each element fits together.
