Creating a kitchen that balances style and function can be challenging, especially when the space needs a little extra storage and counter area. Our Meadowthorpe project presented just that challenge. The client reached out on a Thursday, looking for smart solutions to add storage and possibly more counterspace without disrupting the kitchen’s existing flow. By Monday, we delivered three thoughtful design options that blend seamlessly with their recently remodeled kitchen. Each option focuses on maximizing storage while keeping the space cohesive and practical.

Understanding the Client’s Needs

The client’s kitchen had been remodeled recently, but it lacked sufficient storage and counterspace to meet their daily needs. They wanted solutions that would:

  • Add more storage without overcrowding the space

  • Provide extra counterspace if possible

  • Match the existing cabinetry and finishes for a cohesive look

With these goals in mind, we designed three options that each offer unique storage solutions while respecting the kitchen’s current style.

Design Option 1: Upper and Lower Cabinets on the Right Wall with Utility Cabinet on the Left

The first design option focuses on the right wall, where we added both upper and lower cabinets to increase storage capacity. On the left side, we introduced a 24-inch deep utility cabinet. This cabinet stands out because it features pullout drawers in the base, allowing easy access to the full 24 inches of storage space. This design not only adds storage but also improves usability by making it easier to reach items stored deep inside.

Key features of this option include:

  • Upper and lower cabinets on the right wall for balanced storage

  • Deep utility cabinet on the left with pullout drawers for full access

  • Matching cabinetry style to blend with the existing kitchen

This layout is ideal for those who want to keep the main workspace open while adding storage in strategic spots.

Design Option 2: Upper and Lower Cabinets on Both Ends

The second option expands storage by placing upper and lower cabinets on both ends of the kitchen. This approach creates symmetrical storage zones, giving the client plenty of room to organize kitchen essentials.

Highlights of this design:

  • Upper and lower cabinets on both ends for that extra storage

  • Balanced look that complements the existing kitchen design

  • Extra counterspace created by the additional lower cabinets

This option suits clients who prefer a more traditional cabinet layout with ample storage on

either side.

Design Option 3: Utility Cabinets Framing Both Sides of the Window

The third design option takes the utility cabinet concept further by framing both sides of the kitchen window with these deep 24-inch cabinets. This creates a striking visual feature while adding significant storage. Like the first option, these utility cabinets include pullout drawers in the base, making it easy to access everything stored inside.

This design offers:

  • Utility cabinets on both sides of the window for symmetry and storage

  • Pullout drawers for full use of the deep cabinet space

  • A unique framing effect around the window that enhances the kitchen’s look

This option is perfect for clients who want to highlight the window area while gaining extra storage.

Visualizing the Designs

Some of the images we provided to the client are elevation drawings, which show the vertical layout of cabinets and fixtures. Others are renderings that give a realistic view of how the kitchen will look once completed. We also included layout drawings to clarify the floor plan and cabinet placement.

This mix of visuals helped the client understand each option clearly and make an informed decision quickly.

Fast Turnaround and Client Collaboration

The client contacted us on a Thursday, and by Monday, we had these three detailed options ready. This quick turnaround shows how responsive and efficient our design process can be. We are excited about the opportunity to work with this client to build their dream kitchen, tailored to their specific needs.

Matching the existing kitchen’s product and style was a priority. This ensures the new additions feel like a natural part of the space, not an afterthought. The result will be a kitchen that looks cohesive and functions better than ever.

Final Thoughts on the Meadowthorpe Kitchen Project

Adding storage and counterspace can transform a kitchen from just functional to truly enjoyable. The Meadowthorpe project highlights how thoughtful design can solve common kitchen challenges without sacrificing style. By offering multiple options, we gave the client flexibility and confidence in their choice.
